Description

Design is at the heart of how we empower millions of users across our ecosystem, including WordPress, WooCommerce, and Tumblr. At Automattic, you'll be joining a team that deeply values world-class user experience and strives to understand the diverse needs of our global user base. To learn more about our design philosophy and team culture, we encourage you to visit our [Design Blog](link to design blog - please insert actual link).

As a WordPress Website & Theme Designer, you will be instrumental in creating exceptional WordPress websites and themes for a diverse range of clients, events, and Automattic products. You will collaborate closely with a distributed team of engineers, marketers, and customer support specialists to craft digital experiences that make online publishing and commerce accessible to everyone. This is a fully remote opportunity for a talented designer passionate about building impactful and functional WordPress solutions.

What you’ll do

  • Design Exceptional WordPress Solutions: Design and develop outstanding WordPress websites and themes tailored to the specific needs of multiple clients, internal Automattic events, and various Automattic products.
  • Iterative Design Process: Actively iterate on designs at all stages of fidelity, from initial wireframes and low-fidelity mockups to high-fidelity visual designs and even contributing to the site build process, always informed by project scope, client strategy, and overarching business goals.
  • Clear and Consistent Communication: Communicate design concepts, progress, and rationale clearly and frequently through written updates, verbal discussions (including client calls), and visual presentations to ensure team and client alignment and facilitate smooth implementation.
  • Engineer Collaboration for Quality: Collaborate closely and regularly with engineers to ensure the technical feasibility, quality assurance (QA), and successful launch of high-quality WordPress experiences.
  • Community Contribution: Contribute your expertise and insights to both internal Automattic product development (via constructive feedback) and the broader open-source WordPress and design communities.

What we’re looking for

  • Deep WordPress Understanding: A deep understanding of modern website design principles and contemporary WordPress theming considerations. Strong knowledge of WordPress block themes and the Gutenberg editor is a significant bonus.
  • Relevant Experience: Demonstrated past work experience relevant to Automattic's ecosystem, such as remote work, designing and developing for WordPress, e-commerce platforms, site editors, etc.
  • User-Focused Problem Solving: A keen ability to identify underlying user needs, define clear and effective design solutions within the WordPress context, and deliver those solutions through detailed design specifications and potentially site builds.
  • Design Flexibility: The agility to design effectively in both low-fidelity (wireframing, sketching) and high-fidelity (mockups, visual design, potentially front-end prototyping) and to choose the most efficient and responsible process for each project.
  • Feedback Integration and Iteration: Proven ability to effectively integrate feedback from various stakeholders, validate design assumptions through testing or analysis, and iterate on designs while being mindful of our customers, community contributors, and insights gathered by our support teams.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are crucial for collaborating effectively with a global, remote team and presenting your design work clearly and persuasively, often in written formats.
  • Design and Development Tool Proficiency: Proficiency in industry-standard design and prototyping tools (we primarily use Figma) and a solid understanding of website development cycles and workflows within the WordPress environment.
  • Strong UI and Visual Design Skills: A compelling portfolio showcasing strong user interface (UI) and visual design skills specifically applied to websites and themes, demonstrating your craft through both written explanations and visual examples.
  • Remote Work Adaptability: Familiarity with the principles and practices of remote work (or a strong enthusiasm and willingness to embrace it).

Note: If you feel strongly that you have what it takes for this role but don’t check 100% of the boxes—that’s okay—we encourage you to apply anyway and highlight what you can bring to the table.
